Introduction

Dr. Luebeck's research program, teaching interests, and outreach efforts focus on the preparation and continued professional development of K-12 mathematics teachers. Her primary research interests include developing mechanisms and systems to mentor and support rural mathematics teachers and designing distance learning to provide effective professional development in mathematics. She designs and teaches courses in both undergraduate and graduate programs, and has created a variety of on-line courses and seminars for practicing teachers. Supported by state and federal grants, she directs and contributes to outreach projects supporting the improvement of K-12 mathematics teaching in Montana and beyond.

Dr. Luebeck also coordinates the MSMME Program (Masters of Science in Mathematics – Mathematics Education emphasis). MSMME is a fully-online and WICHE-recognized degree program serving secondary teachers in Montana and the Western region as well as teachers across the country and overseas.  Find more information at http://www.math.montana.edu/MSMME.

Research Interests

Developing innovative tools and frameworks for the effective preparation and professional development of K-12 mathematics teachers, in particular:

  • Models of school-based professional learning for pre-service and in-service teachers (e.g., lesson study, coaching, learning communities, classroom action research);
  • Overcoming barriers to providing content-focused professional development for rural and otherwise isolated mathematics teachers;
  • Effective uses of online and blended learning to develop mathematical and pedagogical knowledge for teaching; and
  • Construction of knowledge through mathematical discourse in the online learning environment.

Current Projects

STREAM: Standards-Based Teaching Renewing Educators Across Montana (PI, 2012-2018)

  • The STREAM project provides statewide, systemic, and sustainable professional learning to K-12 teachers implementing Montana’s Common Core Standards for Mathematics (MCCSM) through a combination of centralized workshops, school-based learning communities and interactive online content modules.

MSP-LEAD: Mathematics and Science Partnership Leaders (Co-PI, 2016-2018)

  • MSP-LEAD prepares Montana teacher leaders in grades 5-12 to lead improvement in mathematics and science at the local, regional and state level.
