Abstract:
Growing technological sophistication in optical communications and quantum engineering brings to the fore generation, processing, and measurement of multi-mode states. Such states are most simply abstracted as multi-dimensional complex vectors, each taken up to a common phase factor. I will outline several mathematical challenges that arise in this context and their relevance to communication through novel multi-core optical fibers.
