Abstract: 

In this talk, we will introduce nonlinear regression and the B-spline knot
selection problem. We will then discuss a method that uses 2^k trees and
hierarchical B-Splines for nonlinear regression. If time permits, we will
extend this method to both the setting of estimating the intensity function of
an inhomogeneous Poisson point process as well as to the mixed-curve regression
setting.
