Abstract:
Ion transport plays an important role in many biological structures, including ion channels, signal transmission in neurons, optical nerve etc. In this talk, I will discuss the standard model for ionic flux in cellular structures, and its extension of modeling other effects like the ion size effect. I will focus on two examples, the propagation of action potential (nerve signal) on axon, and the selectivity of a potassium (K) ion channel. We will see how perturbation method and mathematical modeling are involved in some part of the study.
