Abstract:  In this session, I'll introduce the "Discursive Mathematics Protocol" (DMP), an instructional protocol that is designed to simultaneously support the development of students' mathematical reasoning and learning of the mathematics register. The DMP builds on Pólya's iconic heuristic and incorporates research-based "language practices" and "essential teaching practices." As part of the session, we'll view videos of teachers using the DMP during a problem-solving lesson involving patterning.
