Abstract: Quantum states or non-coherently received classical pulses are often abstracted as complex unit vectors (in a fixed dimension) taken modulo phase. The set of all such equivalence classes forms the complex projective space. I will discuss several open problems concerning sphere packings and Euclidean embeddings for this space that are crucial in optimization of signaling and measurement. This “choose your own adventure” landscape offers an elementary entryway into several fields of mathematics.
