Pursuing a Degree in Arts, Humanities, and/or Certain Social Sciences?

Students who decide to seek a degree in the Arts, Humanities, and/or Certain Social Sciences are typically required to take M 105, Contemporary Math.  To qualify to take the course, students must have one of the following scores:

  • An ACT score of 22
  • An SAT score of 540
  • A combination of an ACT score of 21 and a High School GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • A combination of an SAT score of 530 and a High School GPA of 3.5 or higher

If a student does not meet any of these qualifiers, then there is an option to start with M 088 (Mathematical Literacy).  Please note that this course is taught through Gallatin College.  Finishing this course with a C- or higher, allows for the student to then enroll in M 105.  Another option, if qualified, is for a student to enroll into M 105/150 (Contemporary Math Co-Req) course.  This course is equivalent in content to M 105 but provides extra support for students at a lower level of preparedness.  To qualify to take this combination of courses, students must have one of the following scores:

  • An ACT score of 17
  • An SAT score of 460
  • A combination of an ACT score of 15 and a High School GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • A combination of an SAT score of 380 and a High School GPA of 3.0 or higher

Some students in these majors may be required to enroll into STAT 216 (Introduction to Statistics) as well.  One of the following qualifiers is necessary for eligibility to sign up for this class:

  • An ACT score of 23
  • An SAT score of 560
  • A combination of an ACT score of 21-22 and a High School GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • A combination of an SAT score of 530-550 and a High School GPA of 3.5 or higher

or

  • A C- or higher in the course, M 005/105 (Contemporary Math Co-Req)
  • A C- or higher in the course, M 105 (Contemporary Math)

Pursuing a Degree in STEM, Business, Health and/or Certain Social Sciences?

Students who decide to seek a degree in the fields of STEM, Business, Health and/or Certain Social Sciences are most often required to take a series of math courses.

One starting point for many students is M 121 (College Algebra).  To qualify to take this course, students must have one of the following scores:

  • An ACT score of 23
  • An SAT score of 560
  • A combination of an ACT score of 21-22 and a High School GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • A combination of an SAT score of 530-550 and a High School GPA of 3.5 or higher

Other level three courses that require an above listed qualification include STAT 216 (Introduction to Statistics) and M 132 (Numbers and Operations for K-8 Teachers).

If a student does not meet any of these qualifiers, a student may be able to enroll in M021/121 (College Algebra Co-Req).  This course is equivalent in content to M 121Q but provides extra support for students at a lower level of preparedness.  To qualify to take this combination of courses, students must have one of the following scores:

  • An ACT score of 21
  • An SAT score of 530
  • A combination of an ACT score of 20 and a High School GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • A combination of an SAT score of 520 and a High School GPA of 3.5 or higher

M 121 is a starting point to the Calculus Series that then includes M 151 (Precalculus) and M171 (Calculus).  M 121 is also the pre-requisite to M 161 (Survey of Calculus).  M 161 is not a pre-requisite to other math courses.
