Dr. John Borkowski

MTSI Faculty Mentor

Dr. Jack Skinner, Mechanical Engineering at Montana Tech

DJ conducts research in the Montana Tech Nanotech Laboratory (MTNL) on projects related to spectroscopic ellipsometry and particulate filtration, as well as consulting on modeling and statistical practices used by the MTNL. His work on spectroscopic ellipsometry is centered around reimplementing the model fitting process by using Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques. He will continue to explore and implement optical models to determine the efficacy of Bayesian techniques in this domain. In collaboration with MatSci PhD student Luke Suttey, DJ has been working to characterize airflow through mask media. The mask media study is currently being written into a manuscript. The MTNL is also exploring directed electrospinning, which appears is dominated by a stochastic process. DJ will aid in the design and running of experiments to better understand electrospinning deposition.

Elizabeth Andreas

Math Advisor

Dr. Tomas Gedeon

MTSI Faculty Mentor

Dr. Ross Carlson, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering

In collaboration with Prof. Ross Carlson and Prof. Tomas Gedeon, Elizabeth is working on predictive models of cooperative microbial communities. In particular, she is studying whether or not the maximum power principle predicts biomass gains of the consortium over single species communities and apply it to both artificial experimental communities and natural communities in hard-to-heal wounds.
